Visiting Tanzania in January
Weather and landscape

How does Tanzania's climate look in January? The average weather on the mainland varies from a cool 16°C to a warm 29°C, so it's best to carry some warm clothes in addition to your summer wardrobe! A comfortable 23°C to a scorching high of 32°C can be expected on our islands, so grab your sunscreen!
The month of January, which falls in our "green season," is typically hot and muggy and makes for amazing video opportunities. Rainfall on occasion offers a pleasant break from the heat.
A place to stay in January

It might be difficult to pick from Tanzania's many lovely lodges, and it can be especially difficult in January if you want to escape the large crowds (that's where we come in!).
Because of the pleasant weather in January, it's a popular time to travel. Since it's considered peak season, lodging may be more expensive than at other times of the year.
The popularity of the destination will also depend on where you want to go; if you want to stay in Ndutu and Southern Tanzania, lodging should be reserved as long in advance as you can, but please talk to us about your travel plans so we can provide you advice.

The great wildebeest migration in January

Your best bet is to go to the lovely Ndutu or the warm southern Serengeti plains if you're traveling to Tanzania in January to see the Great Wildebeest Migration. If the rains start falling early enough, babies are abundant in January because it's wildebeest calving season!
In fact, it is the best time to see plenty of newborns while on our safaris because many of our animals give birth in the middle of January and February (depending on the weather). Your chances of experiencing the adrenaline rush of witnessing an active predatory kill during January are great since, as is obvious, the birth of newborns coincides with an increase in predators.

Mount Kilimanjaro climb in January

Although February is also excellent, January is the best month to climb the famous Mount Kilimanjaro. The weather is warmest throughout these times, and climbers are treated to beautiful, sunny sky in the mornings and evenings (just wait till you see the view with us in person to appreciate it!). and clouds, together with a small bit of rain, offer relief from the heat.
Make your reservations well in advance as you get ready to climb the tallest freestanding mountain in the world because it's the most popular month for trekkers and the best month for climbing.

Game drives, wildlife and birds in January

Without doing one of our famous safaris, a trip to Tanzania wouldn't be complete! As we take you through our wonderful parks, climb into one of our game drive cars. Enjoy the lush, verdant foliage that is teeming with migratory birds that are supporting the local inhabitants. Bird lovers are in for the time of their lives!
Around Ndutu, in the central and southern Serengeti, and in the Ngorongoro crater, game watching is outstanding. If the rains come early enough, mid-January may mark the beginning of the birthing season, bringing with it an increase in predatory activity and the excitement that goes along with it.
In January, insect populations are at their peak, so use insect repellent as you would for any summertime activities.

Visiting the beaches and islands of Tanzania in January
Zanzibar Island in January

The lovely Zanzibar's pristine dunes, sapphire waters, and swaying palms are best explored in January. Traveling in January will be fantastic for snorkeling and scuba divers because to the exceptional water clarity of over 25 meters! Allow the consistent "kaskazi" north-eastern wind to cool you off in the sweltering, over 30°C weather.
You can enjoy your holiday in the sun, surf, and sand while taking in the beautiful coral reefs and its local aquatic, technicolor inhabitants. On the island of Zanzibar, mango season occurs in January as well, and there are plenty of ripe and ready mangos waiting to be eaten on the beach!
